Teaching in the Age of ChatGPT: A Discussion about Generative AI, Writing, and Pedagogy9:30am
Teaching in the Age of ChatGPT: A Discussion about Generative AI, Writing, and Pedagogy
Wednesday, February 1st, 2023
09:30 AM - 10:30 AM
Storrs Campus Homer Babbidge Library Room 1102 and online/WebEx [register for link]
Now that ChatGPT and other natural language generators have quite rapidly entered the mainstream, they’re triggering all manner of questions about teaching, learning, and ethics. Some are urgent—what course policies and practices should I consider implementing this semester?—and some philosophical—how might these technologies disrupt some bedrock assumptions about academic integrity, about teaching and learning, about thinking and language, about the purposes of higher education? Bring your own questions to what we expect to be a lively conversation. Coffee will be served.
Convened by Tom Deans (English; UConn Writing Center), Arash Esmaili Zaghi (Civil and Environmental Engineering), Yohei Igarashi (English; Humanities Institute), and Kyle Booten (English). Organized by the Humanities Institute’s Digital Humanities and Media Studies Initiative, the Writing Center, and the Center for Excellence in Teaching and Learning.

Developing Discussion Questions 12:15pm
Developing Discussion Questions
Wednesday, February 1st, 2023
12:15 PM - 01:15 PM
Other Online
Why do some questions generate more engagement than others? Is it better to develop questions in advance or in the moment? How can the facilitator's questions keep the discussion focused while allowing for exploration of students' own inquiry? What makes for a good assignment prompt? This highly interactive session will present sample questions for your evaluation, and then participants will work in groups to develop one or more questions for an upcoming class session.
Depending on the interests of participants, topics may include:
• How do you use questions in the classroom?
• What are your objectives for class discussions?
• Can we remain spontaneous while being intentional with our questions?
• What does equity have to do with the kinds of questions we ask in discussions?
• How do different modes and media support discussion objectives?
• What are some frameworks to consider for question building?
Interactivity level: moderate to high

Enhancing Student Engagement with the Readings
Friday, February 3rd, 2023
12:00 PM - 01:00 PM
Other Online
Can students meet your course objectives without reading the texts? If so, what is the value of assigning reading in your course? What learning objectives does reading help students meet? These foundational questions will frame our discussion. Techniques and tools will be introduced for:
“Guided reading” facilitation
Creating a reading guide
Annotation tools (Perusall, Voicethread)
Games, remixes, and other activities for engaging with a text
Modeling engagement
Ideas will be shared for curating a reading list, including: alphabetic texts vs. audio and video; amount of reading assigned; and organizing access to course readings. This is an interactive session and participants are encouraged to share their experiences and questions.
