Grade Smarter, Not Harder: Rubrics 11:00am
Grade Smarter, Not Harder: Rubrics
Thursday, January 16th, 2025
11:00 AM - 12:00 PM
Grading rubrics are an assessment tool that helps instructors and students focus attention on the important aspects of an assignment. Rubrics promote grading practices that are consistent and free from bias. This introductory workshop explores the elements of a rubric, methods to design rubrics with and without student involvement, and how to apply them within your courses. Attendees are encouraged to bring their rubrics for small group collaborations or their syllabus and ideas for an assignment that would benefit from a rubric.
By the end of this workshop, participants will be able to:
- Identify the value and role of rubrics in measuring student learning
2. Recognize the steps in creating a rubric
3. Connect rubrics with outcomes and learning data
4. Identify an assignment in your course that could use a rubric and draft the criteria

Icebreakers 1:00pm
Icebreakers
Friday, January 17th, 2025
01:00 PM - 02:00 PM
Trust and relationships impact learning. Some icebreakers are designed as on-the-spot, low-stakes games that don’t take a lot of time, while others are designed to support community building in more depth, over time.
We will practice 5 - 6 icebreakers, from simple games that allow students to get to know one another to more complicated activities for building trust and community. We will discuss topics of interest to participants, such as ensuring accessibility of the icebreaker, anxiety, and the value of icebreakers for learning. If you have a favorite icebreaker, there will be time to share them with other participants.
